Woman in her 20s drowns after being hit by freak wave and swept off rocks at Kurnell in Sydney

A woman in her 20s has tragically drowned at a popular beach in Sydney when a freak wave swept her off rocks. 

Emergency services were called to Botany Bay boat ramp at about 12.30pm on Sunday following reports concerning a woman’s welfare. 

Police were told the woman was standing on the rocks at Botany Bay National Park when she was hit by a wall of water.

A passing boat saw the woman's body and pulled her onboard before heading to the Botany Bay boat ramp, where paramedics treated her. She died at the scene (pictured)

Members of the public in a passing boat saw the woman in the water and pulled her aboard. 

The woman was then taken to the boat ramp, where she was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

Despite their efforts, the woman died at the scene. 

Police said the woman has not been formally identified but is believed to be aged in her 20s.   

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
