The family of a man who was found dead in the back of his car have broken their silence as it’s revealed police are treating the death as non-suspicious.

Police were called to a beach south of Mackay Harbour, in North Queensland, after the body was found inside a LandCruiser near East Point Drive at 1.15pm on Saturday.

The area was taped off as detectives declared a crime scene, with initial reports indicating the body had been found wrapped in a plastic bag.

However, Daily Mail Australia understands the report was incorrect and police are treating the man’s death as a suicide.

Just days before the tragedy, the man’s LandCruiser had been stolen before it was eventually tracked down and returned.

Devastated loved ones have revealed the theft was the ‘last straw’ for the man as he grappled with his mental health.

‘Having his car stolen was the straw that broke the camel’s back,’ the family said, through a statement released by a friend on Facebook.

‘To the lowlifes that stole his car, yes, you know who you are, you having [sic] finally pushed someone to breaking point.’

Days before the death, the man issued a plea for help finding his vehicle after it was stolen from East Point.

‘Can everyone keep an eye out for a stolen old 2000 model while Landcruiser Troop Carrier,’ the post read.

‘[It] drive [sic] off at servo last night and [got] bogged at Mount Pleasant but they got it out again. Thanks.’

The tragic discovery of the man’s body was made after members of the public drove past the abandoned car and contacted police when they recognised it as the missing vehicle from the online post.

The witnesses walked over to discover the LandCruisers’ windows boarded up with cardboard.

The man opened the unclipped rear door and made the shocking find before ringing triple-0.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
