‘We have all recipients from all across Queensland that will have access to our first free supermarket that we’re launching today,’ he said.

‘We’re hoping that this will definitely help thousands and thousands of Australians that are doing it tough at the moment – to help them with the basic needs of food.’

Volunteers got to the store at 6am to get the supermarket set up and ready for its official opening.

Mr Matbouly said the store has been ‘received amazingly’ by the community, with many struggling Aussies turning up to get goods for Christmas.

‘We have about 350 homeless friends coming in in a couple hours for a Christmas homeless lunch that will also have access to the first free supermarket,’ he revealed.

‘It’s creating a big impact, we’re hoping to help thousands and thousands over the period.’

The organisation’s founder thanked local community members who had already generously donated bags of non-perishable food in time for the store’s opening.

Serving Our People have set up donation boxes in Coles supermarkets in the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Logan for Queenslanders wishing to donate food.

‘The general public can put any items in there, such as canned tuna, pasta, whatever it is, and then our team will go and collect it and then we’ll bring it back to the free supermarket to make it into bags of love,’ Mr Matbouly said.

He added that the organisation was going to focus on providing shelter for people in need next.
