A South London non-league club believe they have broken the record for the world’s fastest ever goal.

Croydon FC took on Cockfosters Development in the semi-finals of the London Senior Trophy on Saturday, and former Leeds United forward Ryan Hall went for goal straight from kick-off.

His left-footed effort caught the goalkeeper off guard and looped over his head, with the goal being clocked at just 2.31 seconds.

Hall appeared stunned by his own strike as he celebrated by holding his arms out wide while his team-mates mobbed him following his sensational goal.

Croydon posted the goal on their X account, and claimed it was the fastest goal in history before asking for confirmation from the Guinness World Records.

The post read: ‘We’ve finally got a video of Ryan Hall scoring @Croydon_FC’s first goal against @CockfostersDev in the London Senior Trophy.

‘The goal was timed at 2.31 seconds, which we understand to be the fastest goal in senior football in the world. Can you confirm @GWR?’

GWR responded to the goal with the reply ‘what a hit son, what a hit’, but they did not confirm whether it was the fastest goal ever.

However, it appears that Hall’s goal may actually have just missed out on being the quickest in history.

Gavin Stokes scored for Maryhill against Clydebank in a West of Scotland Super League First Division match after just 2.1 seconds in 2017, with the goal going viral on social media.

That goal was the second-fastest ever, behind one netted by Nawaf Al Abed’s goal that came after two seconds in a 4-0 win for Al-Hilal over Al Shoalah in Saudi Arabia.

Vuk Bakic also found the net after just 2.2 seconds in a clash between GSP Polet and FK Dorcol in the Serbian Second Division in 2012, meaning Hall’s wonder strike may only be the fourth-fastest goal ever.

It still eclipses the fastest ever Premier League goal, though, that was scored in 7.69 seconds by Southampton’s Shane Long against Watford in 2019.
