Man refused bail after allegedly assaulting Coles trolley collector

Johvahn Lea’Ana is accused of trying to leave the self service checkout at Blacktown’s Westpoint Shopping Centre with two baskets full of products about 6.30pm on Sunday.

When Coles worker Yaraslav Potasznyk tried to intervene, he was allegedly pushed backwards, hitting his head.

Potasznyk was rushed to Westmead Hospital, where his health deteriorated. The 64-year-old remains in a critical condition.

Security video allegedly shows 25-year-old Lea’Ana walking calmly from the scene as witnesses called for first aid to help the 64-year-old employee.

Police allege Lea’Ana then went to Woolworths Schofields where it’s claimed he stole a basket full of groceries worth just under $100.

He was arrested at a Schofields home yesterday and charged with reckless grievous bodily harm and two counts of larceny.

The Australian Retailers Association and Coles both made statements about the alleged assault.

“It’s a concern for retail workers, they’re turning up to do their day job, they’re at the front line and to be treated this way is just terrible,” ARA CEO Paul Zahra said.

Coles released a statement saying it’s “providing support for the team member’s family and those who work at the store.”

Lea’Ana faced Blacktown court today where he was refused bail. He will reappear next month.
