Firefighters made the grim discovery of a body inside a property in what police suspect was a late-night arson attack.
The grim find was made after fire crews were called to a blaze in the northern Victorian town of Kerang just after midnight on Saturday.
Although the blaze at the Lilac Avenue property was extinguished, the single occupant inside could not be saved.

The fire occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday in the Victoria/NSW border town of Kerang
A crime scene has been established as police look into the circumstances of the fire.
‘Sadly, a body was found inside the property once the fire was extinguished,’ Victoria Police said in a statement.
Arson and Explosives Squad officers and a specialist arson chemist have been called to the scene.
Police are urging anyone who might have information about the incident to come forward.
