ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. (TCD) — A woman stands accused of killing a sex offender who allegedly tried to assault her over the weekend.
On Sunday, March 3, at around 3:30 p.m., deputies with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a laundromat in the 28000 block of U.S. Highway 190 to a report of an unresponsive man with a stab wound. Deputies found the victim, 40-year-old Nicholas Tranchant, and he was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
While deputies were on their way to the scene, the sheriff’s office also received a report of a woman “claiming she had stabbed a man who had attacked her while she was at the laundromat.”
Investigators allege Tranchant, a convicted sex offender, went into the establishment with a sharp weapon and tried to sexually assault the woman. She reportedly disarmed Tranchant and allegedly stabbed him with his own weapon before safely escaping the business.
According to the sheriff’s office, the woman also suffered injuries from the incident, and she was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Tranchant served time in jail after being convicted in 2003 of indecent behavior with juveniles. He was also convicted in May 2008 for attempted aggravated rape and aggravated burglary. Tranchant was released just over two months ago, in December 2023, and had to register as a sex offender.
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith said, “I want to compliment this brave woman on the courage and strength she showed in fighting back against her attacker and ask for prayers for her continued recovery.”
