Matildas star Sam Kerr will fight to have charges of harassing a police officer dropped ahead of her trial scheduled for next February.

Kerr, 30, was charged on January 21 with the racially aggravated harassment of a police officer.

“The charge relates to an incident involving a police officer who was responding to a complaint involving a taxi fare on 30 January 2023 in Twickenham,” London’s Metropolitan Police said.

She faced court this week via video-link and entered a not-guilty plea.

However, a new court date has been set for April, where it’s understood Kerr’s lawyers will argue the charges should be dropped due to abuse of process.

Abuse of process consists of arguing that the defendant would not receive a fair trial and or it would be unfair for the defendant to be tried.

Kerr, who is sidelined with an ACL injury, has not yet spoken publicly about the charges.

Football Australia chief executive James Johnson confirmed yesterday she had not informed the body ahead of the court date.

“I woke up this morning like everyone else did to the news,” Johnson told reporters in Adelaide.

“And that is when Football Australia found out about this unsettling event.

“We are trying to get to the bottom of it at the moment.

“We have got our own questions that we’d like to know, we have got to find out what actually happened.

“But we also want to say that there is a process that is under way in the United Kingdom and that process needs to run its course.”
