Chelsea sent Andrey Santos to sister club Strasbourg on loan in the last transfer window.

However, Chelsea initially offered another one of their players to Patrick Vieira’s side.

According to The Athletic, before Santos’ move to France, the Blues proposed for Deivid Washington to join Strasbourg on loan.

The same outlet has claimed, though, that Vieira was not keen on the young striker, who remained at Stamford Bridge.

A loan to Strasbourg or somewhere else would have been good for Washington, as the 18-year-old is not getting minutes in the first team. He has made just one appearance in the Premier League this season. Mauricio Pochettino, however, has claimed that he still sees Washington as an option.

Patrick Vieira was not keen on Deivid Washington

Vieira was not too convinced with the idea of bringing Washington to Strasbourg and ended up with Santos instead, which may work out better for the former Crystal Palace manager.

At 20, Santos is obviously further ahead in his development than Washington, already a Brazil international.

The midfielder is more likely to make an impact now compared to his compatriot.

Washington has now had to stay at Chelsea and while he is not playing there at the moment, it is not exactly the end of the world for the former Santos man.

Still only 18 years of age, Washington can get time playing for one of Chelsea’s youth teams and develop there, while training with the senior squad will also help him to grow.

Nothing is better than getting minutes in the men’s game, but again, Washington is still quite young. Playing for the U21s, for example, will not kill him.

What Chelsea do with the centre-forward in the summer will be interesting, though. While Washington may be content with life now, he will eventually want a role in someone’s senior squad, whether that is Chelsea’s or another club’s.
