Pundit Gary Neville has now claimed that he doesn’t really know why Chelsea made one transfer last summer.

He told Sky Sports’ Fan Debate that he feels the club did not need to make a move to sign Romeo Lavia from Southampton considering the players they already had at the club.

Lavia has seen his first campaign at Stamford Bridge plagued by injuries, with him making just one appearance this season.

There is currently no real timetable on his return, however he has been missing now for the best part of three months again.

The Blues have Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo playing near enough every minute of every game right now due to injuries elsewhere, with Mauricio Pochettino admitting he has not been able to give them rests recently.

Neville questions Lavia signing

Despite this, Neville has claimed that he doesn’t believe the signing was necessary, given the fact they also have Conor Gallagher as a member of the first team.

He said: “They [Chelsea] went and bought Enzo, they go and buy Caicedo and then through their ego they went and bought Lavia on the final day of the transfer window for £54m and then they have to sell Conor Gallagher? They didn’t need Lavia, he’s not even played a game for them anyway.”

It did look last summer as if it was going to be one of Lavia or Caicedo coming into the club, with Liverpool also interested in signing both players.

However, the Blues blew them out of the water with bids for both, leaving some scratching their heads as to how the trio would all fit in the side.

It could unfortunately come at the expense of Gallagher, with reports still swirling that he could be on the move at the end of the season.

Despite his impressive performances in recent weeks in particular, it is still thought that some at the club would be wiling to sacrifice him in the face of any potential financial woes.
