A police officer in South Australia has been rushed to hospital after they were allegedly struck in a hit and run this afternoon. 

The officer had been attempting to stop a vehicle on the Barrier Highway near Ucolta in the state’s mid-north when they were hit.

Police said the vehicle then left the scene and was tracked from the air as it continued south on the Barrier Highway.

The alleged driver continued for about 45 minutes until they were arrested north of Hallett about 3.45pm.

No charges have yet been laid.

The officer was taken to Peterborough Hospital in a stable condition and then flown to Adelaide for further medical attention.

Drivers were warned to expect delays on the Barrier Highway. 

Traffic was restricted to one lane in each direction as Major Crash Investigators examined the scene.
