Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murder after a woman was found dead in a car on a housing estate in east London.

Officers were called to Whiston Road in Hackney shortly before 6.45am on Saturday morning following concerns for the woman’s welfare.

The woman, said to be in her 20s, was found inside a grey Vauxhall Mokka crossover hatchback – with officers forcing entry into the vehicle in order to give her CPR.

Despite the best efforts of police and paramedics to resuscitate her, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Formal identification is yet to take place but officers say they are confident they know her identity and have informed next of kin.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place. The Metropolitan Police said it arrested a man in his 20s close to the scene on suspicion of murder.

Detectives believe the man who has been arrested and the woman were known to each other but have released no further details. Enquiries are ongoing and an appeal for information remains active.

Police carried out CPR until paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance arrived.

Images of the scene show a white and yellow forensics tent was established on a side street north of the Blisworth House and Cosgrove House complexes.

The passenger side of the car was obscured with a large blue tarpaulin to obscure the scene from public view.

Scene of crime officers dressed in blue overalls, hairnets and face coverings were seen coming and going from the tent, and retrieving supplies from a crime scene investigation van.

Detectives Inspector Aytac Necati, Specialist Crime, said: ‘As my colleagues and I begin our work today, we are all mindful of the human tragedy here.

‘The victim’s family will be provided with every possible support and I can assure them that the Met’s investigation will be conducted with rigour and professionalism.

‘While enquiries are in their early stages, I believe the deceased and the man arrested were known to each other.

‘A crime scene remains in place in Whiston Road. Local people can expect to see additional police officers in the area in the coming days, and I urge them to speak with these officers should they have information or concerns.’

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on 101 quoting reference CAD 1561/6 April. Information can also be submitted anonymously via Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
