Madison Marsh (age 22, born August 2, 2001) from Fort Smith, Arkansas, made history by becoming the first active-duty US Air Force officer to be crowned Miss America 2024. The ceremony took place in Orlando, Florida, on Sunday, January 14, 2024.
Before her Miss America win, Second Lt Marsh had already earned the title of Miss Colorado in May 2023, leading her to compete in the national finals.
While attending the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), Marsh, a budding Top Gun pilot, decided to participate in pageants as an extracurricular activity. She appreciates the community service aspects and the emphasis on public speaking within pageants.
Marsh values the evolving nature of pageants, especially regarding women’s fitness. She notes the positive alignment with her military fitness requirements, stating, “For me, it’s great because I need to stay physically fit and in the gym for the military, so it already coincides with pageant training.”
Arkansas State Representative Steve Womack congratulated Marsh on her achievement, expressing pride in her remarkable strength and story, anticipating it to inspire young women across America.
How did Madison Marsh become a US Air Force pilot?
Madison Marsh’s journey to becoming a US Air Force pilot began at the age of 15, right after her sophomore year of high school. Initially, her interest in flying was driven by a desire to secure a spot at the Air Force Academy and increase her chances of becoming a fighter pilot or astronaut.
Over the years, flying became her therapy and source of joy. While working on her pilot’s license, she faced the loss of her mom to pancreatic cancer. In response, Madison and her family started a nonprofit to raise money and awareness for pancreatic cancer in their town.
Driven by her personal experience, Marsh is now considering a career in cancer research. She expressed her determination to take the next step by using her studies at the Kennedy School to understand the intricacies of policymaking related to cancer.
Flying became her escape from life’s challenges. At 17, she earned her pilot’s license and set her sights on becoming a cadet.
After graduating from the Air Force Academy, Madison got a pilot slot in the Air Force. Now, she’s considering career paths and personal projects, even thinking about cancer research inspired by her mom’s battle.
