Belarusian special forces celebrated their 60th anniversary in an unusual way – by setting each other on fire and hitting fellow comrades with burning sledgehammers. 

The anniversary event of the fifth separate special forces brigade was held in Maryina Gorka in the regional centre of the Minsk region in Belarus on December 27. 

Striking pictures show soldiers demonstrating their skills, as well as displays of small arms, hand-to-hand combat and mountaineering training. 

In addition to the daredevil tactics, reports from Belarus Today said that the celebrations also involved a special concert, porridge and hot tea.  

The 5th Special Purpose Brigade was formed in Maryina Gorka on January 1, 1963. Since May 2007, the military unit has been part of the special operations forces of the Armed Forces of Belarus. 

On July 24, 2020, the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko visited the brigade, spoke to the servicemen, and examined the small arms used by special forces. 

On a similar event on December 22 this year, the acting commander of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces, Colonel Dmitry Kuchuk, spoke about the power of the brigade, saying: ‘Throughout its existence, the brigade has taken part in all large and serious events – exercises, patriotic education of our citizens.’
