Conor Gallagher’s future at Chelsea could be thrown into further doubt following Mauricio Pochettino’s exit.

Mauricio Pochettino left Chelsea by mutual consent on Tuesday after just one season at the club.

Conor Gallagher was a favourite of his, with the Argentine handing him 50 appearances this term.

In the absence of Reece James and Ben Chilwell, the midfielder also got to captain the side, showing just how much his former manager trusted him.

However, even while Pochettino was at Stamford Bridge, Gallagher’s future looked to be in doubt. The 24-year-old is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract and has been linked with a move to Aston Villa.

What does Conor Gallagher plan to do after Mauricio Pochettino’s departure?

Having to compete against the likes of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, the two most expensive signings in Chelsea’s history, Gallagher could see his game time reduced next season now that Pochettino is no longer at the club.

Nevertheless, it looks like the Englishman is still keen to remain in west London.

According to BBC Sport, Gallagher is reluctant to leave Chelsea despite Pochettino, who clearly loved the midfielder, departing.

However, with his contract running down and Pochettino not there to convince the club to give him a new one, he may not get his wish this summer.

Conor Gallagher can play under most managers

Pochettino’s exit does not have to mean the end of Gallagher at Chelsea.

This season, the England international has shown that he is a midfielder who can do a lot.

For example, he came up with some important goals for his side. It was his fantastic strike that helped Chelsea to earn a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa last month after the Blues had gone 2-0 down.

Gallagher was also excellent at winning back the ball, making 85 tackles in the Premier League. It puts him in the top 15 players for that department.

His contract situation remains a major issue, though, and probably makes selling him a no-brainer to the club’s owners, who will not want to lose their asset for nothing later down the line.
