There’s a general feeling of surprise from those within football when it comes to one specific Chelsea manager rumour.

Chelsea supporters are anxiously waiting for more developments on the club’s managerial search.

Following Mauricio Pochettino’s recent exit from Stamford Bridge by mutual consent, the Blues are now seeking to appoint a new head coach for next season.

The Guardian has claimed that Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca, Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna and Brentford’s Thomas Frank are on Chelsea’s managerial shortlist still.

Apparently, one thing about the hunt for Chelsea’s next manager has shocked some in the football industry.

Chelsea rumour is surprising plenty

The Independent reports that the amount of high-profile interest in Ipswich’s Kieran McKenna at this stage of his managerial career is a real surprise to everyone in football.

It is understood that the 38-year-old boss is receiving concrete interest from Premier League sides Chelsea, Manchester United and Brighton.

Why is Kieran McKenna so attractive to clubs?

When you consider McKenna is a young manager who’s never been in charge of a top division club before, it’s a slight surprise so many established teams in the Premier League like him to this extent.

The Northern Irishman has been a senior manager for less than three years since leaving his role as an assistant at Man United. However, he’s built up quite a strong CV in the lower leagues with one club.

McKenna’s achieved back-to-back promotions as Ipswich boss from League One to the Premier League. In particular, finishing second in the Championship this year above the likes of Leeds United and Southampton is super impressive when you compare squads.

Here below is his mouthwatering record at Ipswich:

Matches 131
Won 76
Draw 35
Loss 20
Points Per Match 2.01

You can’t argue that McKenna’s not done a marvelous job at Portman Road, but people are wondering is that really enough to take charge at Stamford Bridge or Old Trafford?

The Chelsea Chronicle would suggest Brighton is the more logical step in his coaching progression. Alternatively, staying with the Ipswich side he’s just got promoted to the Premier League makes sense.

However, perhaps clubs spot something special in this young upcoming coach.
