Simon Jordan has been quick to jump to the defence of one Chelsea player.

Since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali‘s Clearlake Capital, Chelsea have spent a lot of money on signings.

That includes the likes of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella, three of the most expensive arrivals in the club’s history.

Despite that, Chelsea have still struggled in the Premier League. This season, they finished sixth in the table, while last term, they came 12th.

Unsurprisingly, their recent transfer business has been questioned as a result.

Simon Jordan hits out at Chelsea player’s critics

Given how much money was spent on signings such as Caicedo, Fernandez and Cucurella, you would have expected the trio and Chelsea as a whole to have performed much better over the last two seasons.

After recent improvement, though, Jordan is not having the criticism aimed at Cucurella, especially after he was called up to Spain’s latest squad.

Speaking about the left-back on talkSPORT, he said: “We look at their spend pattern and people were talking about Cucurella and how useless he was and how much money they spent on him.

“But no one’s mentioned that Cucurella’s been picked for the Spanish national squad, so obviously he’s at a level now where people think he’s operating at a higher level.”

Marc Cucurella can still thrive under Enzo Maresca

There is no doubt that Cucurella is a quality player. When he first came to England, his manager at the time, Graham Potter, described him as a “fantastic addition” to Brighton & Hove Albion’s squad.

Potter would then go on to manage him at Chelsea, but it was Mauricio Pochettino who truly got the best out of the 25-year-old after using him as an inverted full-back.

Cucurella finished the season with the highest average for tackles per league game (three) in Chelsea’s squad, according to WhoScored.

Pochettino may be gone now, but Enzo Maresca has used an inverted full-back at Leicester City, so perhaps Cucurella will continue playing that role at Chelsea.
