Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen is currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund.

Ian Maatsen joined Borussia Dortmund back in January and is having a good time there.

He is playing regularly and helped the German club to reach the Champions League final, where they will face Real Madrid.

In total, the left-back has made 21 starts at Dortmund. For Chelsea this season, he made just three.

It now looks like Maatsen could remain at Signal Iduna Park. However, it has been claimed that the Blues do not want to sell him for anything lower than £35m.

Borussia Dortmund plotting bid for Ian Maatsen

Maatsen’s sole focus will be on Saturday’s Champions League final at Wembley.

After that, the Dutchman is likely to make a decision on his future. And according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, that is when Dortmund plan to make their first offer, which is set to be lower than his £35m release clause, to sign him permanently.

“Borussia Dortmund will approach Chelsea after the UCL final to negotiate for Ian Maatsen,” he posted on X. “The opening proposal will be under £35m clause value but with different structure.

“Maatsen, very happy at Dortmund and among priority targets for BVB.”

Will Chelsea accept Borussia Dortmund’s opening offer for Ian Maatsen?

That £35m release clause is there for a reason. Chelsea are not going to sell Maatsen at a price lower than that, or at least not so early into the transfer window.

The Netherlands U21 international has been linked to some big clubs, including Bayern Munich and Manchester City.

One of those European giants may be happy to pay £35m, the latter certainly have the money to do so, so it would be a surprise if Chelsea accepted Dortmund’s initial proposal for Maatsen after the Champions League final.

With Ben Chilwell’s injury problems and reports that Enzo Maresca will try to sign a new left-back once he gets the Chelsea job, the Blues would be better off just keeping hold of Maatsen. But that looks like it is going to be a challenge now.
