Chelsea have been told that they simply need to get more from their “gifted” player next season.

The Blues went through another turbulent year during the 2023/24 campaign, which ended in a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League to seal a spot in next season’s UEFA Conference League.

Like always, the drama has been flying around Stamford Bridge. Chelsea recently parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino after just one year as head coach, with the wider media claiming that Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca will be appointed his successor in the dugout.

Maresca will be taking charge of a young squad that has undoubted talent and potential, but there’s so many puzzles for him to solve as well.

Chelsea must get more from midfielder

TalkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend has just delivered an interesting message to Chelsea about Enzo Fernandez.

He claims that the 23-year-old central midfielder was nowhere near his best last season, so the club needs to make sure they help him reach his maximum level next year. Can Maresca be the coach to help facilitate that?

When discussing Fernandez on talkSPORT (8:47am, 31 May), Townsend said: “Have got to sort out the little bit of conundrum with Enzo (Fernandez). Obviously, he was injured at the back end of the season. He is clearly a gifted and talented footballer. That’s not up for debate. Tried to get him integrated, it didn’t quite work. We never saw the best of him, did we? Didn’t really exactly get what his best position was.

“We just couldn’t seem to see the best of Enzo, so that’s something that has got to be sorted, trying to fit these personnel into the right positions. Because if it is Enzo, Conor Gallagher and Caicedo, that’s a little bit of samey, but when it was Gallagher, Caicedo and Cole Palmer, then you had a really lovely feel about the way that was moving.”

Enzo Fernandez should be under pressure next season

During his 18 months as a Chelsea player so far, Fernandez is yet to really show why the club invested £106.8m (Sky Sports) to buy him from Benfica. There was a lot of excitement from the fanbase because he’s a World Cup winner with Argentina, but he’s mainly flattered to deceive in English football.

Therefore, the 2024/25 season simply has to be a big one for him!

With the midfielder’s technical ability and vision, The Chelsea Chronicle is still optimistic he will come good.

If Chelsea can get Fernandez on the ball in the correct midfield pockets, he’s got the all-round game to pull the strings and shine.
