Two suspected thieves are on the run after a man was stabbed early this morning in northern Adelaide.

Police received reports two men were breaking into cars on Gonis Circuit in Evanston Gardens before 2.15am.

A 42-year-old man is believed to have followed one of them onto Seabrook Street, where he was assaulted and suffered stab wounds to his back.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and took the victim to hospital for his serious but non-life-threatening injures.

Police said they searched the area for the two men, but could not find them.

Witnesses reported the pair had fled the scene.

Investigations are ongoing and police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
