A man has been arrested after a woman was found dead in a home in northern New South Wales.

Police have declared a critical incident after they were called to Johnston Street in Casino, southwest of Byron Bay, about 2.30am today following reports of a welfare concern.

Officers arrived and tried to assist a woman at the home but she died.

The woman, believed to be aged in her 40s, has not yet been formally identified.

A man, 31, was arrested at the scene and taken to Lismore Police Station, where he is being questioned.

Police said they believe the man is known to the woman.

A crime scene has been established at the home and a critical incident investigation is underway into the death and the response from NSW Police.

State homicide officers are helping local police in their investigations.
