He said police noticed a black Mercedes had been driving erratically moments before the crash unfolded.

Supt Hanlon said officers turned on the sirens on their vehicle and intended to intercept the van but called it off because of the ‘conduct of the driver’.

The police vehicle was later flagged down by a passing driver who informed them the black Mercedes had collided with a silver Mercedes.

The force of the impact then pushed the silver Mercedes off the road and into a power pole.

‘That power pole then fell on the black Mercedes and the black Mercedes caught fire,’ Supt Hanlon said.

Police were able to free two people from the silver Mercedes and provide first aid before paramedics arrived, however the trio could not be revived.

A local woman said her husband ran to help after hearing a ‘massive bang’ and pulled a woman from a vehicle just moments before it exploded.

‘It was a very, very confronting scene for police and all emergency response who attended as well as members of public who came and supported police and assisted to try and save these people’s lives,’ Supt Hanlon said.

He added police were still investigating the cause of the crash and that it was ‘too early’ to lay charges against anyone in connection to the incident.

More than 1,000 homes and businesses in the area were left without electricity after the power pole was downed in the crash.

Energex, which services at least 3.4million South East Queenslanders, said at least  997 customers in Austinville, Bonogin and Mudgeeraba areas had been affected.

Most households had their power restored by 7pm, but other customers in Bonogin and Mudgeeraba were left in the dark after ‘a vehicle damaged Energex equipment’.
