Chelsea have on Friday evening confirmed yet another signing in this summer transfer window.
The Blues have announced via their official website that Renato Veiga has joined from FC Basel, signing a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
According to the Daily Mail, Veiga has cost Chelsea a £12m transfer fee.
The 20-year-old becomes the latest new recruit for Enzo Maresca’s squad this summer.
He joins Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as the new signings. A deal for Estevao Willian to join in 2025 has been confirmed, too.
Veiga, who’s left-footed, is such a versatile player that can fill plenty of roles on a football pitch.
During last season with Basel, he was regularly changing between midfield and defensive positions.
The Evening Standard claims that Chelsea’s plan is to use Veiga as an inverted full-back.
Where would he be most comfortable playing, though?
Renato Veiga shares he doesn’t have a favourite position
Chelsea supporters will surely be intrigued to hear that Veiga doesn’t have a preferred position yet on the pitch.
He’s explained during his first interview as a Blues player with the club’s media that he’s very versatile.
The Portuguese talent has previously operated as a left-back, centre-back and as a defensive midfielder.
“I’m a smart, aggressive player,” Veiga said via Chelsea’s official website.
“I’m comfortable on the ball and I would describe myself as a complete player due to my versatility. I’m comfortable in many positions on the pitch.
“I wouldn’t say I have a favourite position because it depends on the opponent or tactical elements, but I have played at left-back, centre-back and as a defensive midfielder.
“I like to defend a lot and with my height and physical strength, I enjoy it. I like to control the game with or without the ball.”
Where could Chelsea need him?
It’s always useful having players in your squad with the flexibility to play numerous positions.
Let’s hope that Veiga is good enough for Chelsea’s first-team squad right now because he’d be a really useful addition to the group.
On paper, Veiga could be an interesting alternative to Marc Cucurella or Ben Chilwell as an inverted left-back.
Alternatively, he can play centre-half or as a No 6 midfielder. These positions are pretty stacked in the squad, but there could be a lot of games to play next season with domestic and European fixtures.
AS reports that Chelsea beat off competition from AC Milan to sign Veiga this summer.
Let’s see if his £12m signing turns out to be a bargain.
