Sam Neill has provided an update on his ongoing cancer treatment after he revealed last year that he had been diagnosed with stage-three blood cancer in his Did I Ever Tell You This? memoir.
The Jurassic Park star was first diagnosed with cancer in March of 2022 when on a trip to his home country, New Zealand, and has since stated he is now currently in remission.
However, he will need treatment on a regular basis for the rest of his life.
While talking with Herald Sun, Neill went into depth about his ongoing treatment, an experience the actor says has been “a bit grim.”
“It’s just meant that every second week it was a case of forget about the weekend because that would be a bit grim,” he told the Herald Sun.
Despite his ongoing treatment being on the “grim” side, Neill added: “But other than that, it’s great to be alive and working and in beautiful places, like York.”
Although he initially went through the chemotherapy process, he was later switched to a rare anti-cancer drug after his first treatments stopped working.
Since using the new drug, he has been in remission, but will need to have bi-weekly infusions for the remainder of his life – he has, however, been told the treatment will eventually stop working.
“I’m not in any way frightened of dying. That’s never worried me from the beginning,” he told the Australian Story during an interview in 2023.
However, he went on to say that although he’s not “frightened of dying”, he would be “annoyed.”
“I would be annoyed. I’d be annoyed because there are things I still want to do. Very irritating, dying. But I’m not afraid of it,” he said in the same interview.
