Iconic actress Shannen Doherty has passed away at 53 after a long terminal illness.
According to Variety, the Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed star died following a valiant fight with breast cancer, which was first diagnosed in 2015.
Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane said in a statement:
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress, Shannen Doherty.”
“On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.”
The statement further reads, “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie.”
“The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.
After achieving remission in 2017, the cancer returned in 2020, this time at stage four.
In June 2023, she shared the heartbreaking news that the cancer had spread to her brain.
Shannen Doherty shot to prominence for her role as Brenda Walsh on the original Beverly Hills, 90210, which debuted in October 1990.
She left the show after the fourth season in 1994 but made several guest appearances on the 2008 reboot 90210.
Following her success on Beverly Hills, Doherty was cast as Prue Halliwell in Charmed, playing the oldest of three witch sisters.
She not only starred in the series but also directed several episodes, leaving the show at the end of its third season in 2001.
In feature films, Shannen Doherty starred in another teen classic, Heathers, as well as Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Kevin Smith’s Mallrats, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
She also appeared in other TV shows like North Shore and Riverdale, along with several TV movies.
