A teenager has been charged after allegedly dropping a four-kilogram rock off a cliff and into the windscreen of an oncoming car.

Police say the 18-year-old dropped the rock from 20 metres above the ground on Henry Lawson Drive, near Boomerang Reserve, in Sydney’s south-west at about 10pm on Saturday.

A 24-year-old woman was behind the wheel of the car, and suffered severe bone and muscle bruising when the rock smashed through her windscreen.

Police officers and dogs searched the area on Saturday night but didn’t find anyone, but later the 18-year-old man was arrested and charged with damaging or destroying property with the intention of endangering life.

“I think it is pure luck that the driver didn’t suffer more serious injuries – or even worse,” NSW Police Inspector Matthew Waring said on Sunday morning.

“The fact that someone has dropped a large rock from the top of a hill onto a random vehicle is beyond belief.”

The 18-year-old was due to face Bankstown Local Court.
