Former Chelsea player Jason Cundy has been discussing Conor Gallagher’s contract situation at Stamford Bridge.

Conor Gallagher has entered the final 12 months of his existing deal, giving Chelsea a huge decision to make this summer.

The Blues can offer him a new one, but if not, a sale will have to be considered, otherwise they are at risk of losing the midfielder on a free transfer next summer.

Chelsea could sign Andreas Pereira from Fulham if they do go on to lose Gallagher, but again, there is still time for them to hand him a new contract.

As of now, though, Gallagher does not seem to be any closer to putting pen to paper on a fresh deal.

Jason Cundy on Conor Gallagher’s contract situation at Chelsea

Gallagher is a Chelsea fan and has been at the club his whole life, coming through the Blues’ academy.

According to Cundy, the 24-year-old wants to remain at Stamford Bridge and sign a new contract. But no agreement has been reached yet.

Speaking about Gallagher on talkSPORT, the former Chelsea player said: “When the transfer window shuts at the end of August, he will have less than a year left on his contract. If the window shuts and he has not been sold, Chelsea have got a bit of a problem on their hands.

“He is a Chelsea fan, he wants to stay at the club, he wants to sign a new contract from what I understand, and for some reason that agreement has not been made between him and the club, and something has got to be worked out. What the club don’t want is him leaving on a free next summer. That would be terrible.”

If he does leave Chelsea this summer, then Tottenham could be a possible destination for Gallagher.

Chelsea not desperate to offer Conor Gallagher a new contract

While Chelsea may be in talks with Gallagher over a contract extension, they do not seem desperate for him to sign one.

If they were, then the Englishman would have probably done so by now. The club have also brought Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in, who is a similar profile of midfielder to his compatriot, and are currently being linked with Pereira.

Ultimately, everything is pointing towards Gallagher not being part of Enzo Maresca‘s squad this upcoming season.

He was a key player under Mauricio Pochettino last term, making 50 appearances in all competitions. It looks like others at Chelsea do not value the England international as highly as Pochettino did, though, making an exit this summer extremely possible.

Many Chelsea fans will not be happy to watch one of their own go, but as this contract saga drags on, that appears to be the most likely outcome.
