Despite being two goals up at the break, the lead should have been further if they had scored a penalty they were awarded.

Cole Palmer has been the usual spot kick taker this season, and it is clear to see why as he boasts a 100% record from 12 yards.

Shearer angry at Sterling for taking penalty

Shearer asked: “What on earth is going on there is the first half?”

To which Lineker said: “That was really odd!”

Before Shearer added: “I mean, seriously. I was getting angry and I didn’t really care. I’m thinking why on earth is he taking the ball off Palmer. He has scored five out of five this season.

“He’s the best player for Chelsea. He’s been brilliant all season, he looks confident whenever he is taking them. Why would you even contemplate taking it off him?”

Sterling’s penalty miss was one of a number of bad moments for him during the quarter-final, as the crowd continued to grow frustrated with what they were seeing.

He missed a glorious one on one chance in front of goal, before striking one of the worst free-kicks seen in football history in front of the Matthew Harding stand.
