One former Chelsea manager may not be out of work for too long, with Newcastle United reportedly eyeing him.

Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel are both unemployed after leaving Chelsea and Bayern Munich respectively at the end of last season.

However, one of them could be in line for the Newcastle job, as Eddie Howe could quit the Magpies for the England gig.

Pochettino and Tuchel are also being linked to the England vacancy following Gareth Southgate’s decision to step down as manager after the Three Lions’ 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Graham Potter is also an option for the FA. However, Potter hasn’t been too keen to talk about replacing Southgate.

Mauricio Pochettino could replace Eddie Howe at Newcastle

Pochettino’s in the race to become England manager as well, but if he misses out on that job, he could end up in the St James’ Park dugout.

According to the Daily Mirror, Howe is on the Three Lions’ shortlist to replace Southgate and if that happens, then Newcastle will make a move for Pochettino.

The Argentine remains available after leaving Chelsea in May, with the Blues naming Enzo Maresca has his successor.

Having managed at Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, Pochettino is quite a logical name for Newcastle to consider.

Mauricio Pochettino joining Newcastle would not be good for Chelsea

While everything may not have gone to plan for Pochettino at Chelsea, the 52-year-old is still a very good coach.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou hailed his impact at the club he is managing at now as “unbelievable”, as shared by BBC Sport.

He is capable of guiding Newcastle to a good position in the Premier League and if he does that while Chelsea finish below them, then questions are going to be asked about why the Blues let him go.

Ultimately, Pochettino going on to join Newcastle could easily put the spotlight on Maresca a bit, which is not something the club are going to want once the season starts.
