Gone for a T break? Bungling workmen paint huge sign on road directing motorists to the ‘town cenre’

  • Workers misspelled ‘town centre’ on a road in Scarborough, writing ‘town cenre’
  • The spelling gaffe was posted on a Facebook group called ‘Scarborough Moan’
  • People shared their amusement, saying a dictionary was needed by the workers
  • One person jokingly wrote: ‘Are we sure they didn’t just pop of for a T break’

Bungling workmen painted a huge sign on the road directing motorists to the ‘town cenre’.

The spelling gaffe in the seaside resort of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, caused hilarity when the images were widely shared on social media.

The workers were fixing the road in the Northway route near Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s theatre when they laid out cones and daubed the misspelled message in white paint.

People were quick to add their punny quips about the missing letter, such as asking if the workmen had popped for a ‘T break’.

The image was shared on Facebook by Caroline Bains with the caption: ‘Surely that can’t be right?’

It provoked hilarity with comments such as ‘Needed a dictionary for Christmas’, and ‘Apparently he’s sorting it out later, he’s just nipped home for his T…’

Other pun jibes about the missing letter included: ‘Are we sure they didn’t just pop of for a T break’.

Someone else commented: ‘Ironic that’s next to the job centre, that’s where he will be going after this.’

Another person referenced the proximity, saying: ‘At least they didn’t have walk far to the job centre’, to which another snapped back with ‘You mean the job cenre’.

Referencing the recent announcement from the Prime Minister that pupils must study maths until they are 18, someone commented: ‘Erm… Rishi… Forget Maths, mate…’

But then another image appeared, showing a hand painted T with an arrow pointing to the gap between the N and R. It was posted by Helen Patricia who said: ‘My friend fixed it!’

However one Facebook user felt bad for the workmen, writing: ‘We are all only human and am sure they’ll be feeling bad enough.’

Someone posted an old photo of the area with faded markings, showing ‘town centre’ was previously written on the road, correctly.
