A Republican luxury car salesman, who is looking to challenge Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, has suggested Northern white descendants of Civil War soldiers should be eligible for reparations.

Bernie Moreno, 55, of Westlake – a suburb of Cleveland – is hoping to upstage long-term Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown who has held his seat since 2007 in the November polls.

As he continues on his campaign trail through the Buckeye State, he stopped in Milford on Tuesday and told residents he believed descendants of Northerners who fought in the Civil War should get reparations.

The Colombian-born candidate said descendants ‘stand at the shoulders of giants,’ like James Madison and George Washington, and ‘that this group of people took on the largest empire in history.’

‘They said no, we will not stand for this. And won,’ Moreno said at the Milford rally. ‘That same group of people later, white people, died to free black people. It’s never happened in human history before, but it happened here in America. That’s not taught a lot in schools much is it?

'You know, they talk about reparations. Where are the reparations for the people in the North who died to save the lives of black people?' he said

‘They make it sound like America is a racist, broken country. You name a country that did that: that freed slaves, died to do that. You know, they talk about reparations. Where are the reparations for the people in the North who died to save the lives of black people?’

Recently, California has been debating giving reparations to black citizens who are descents of slaves and they could receive up to $360,000. The discussion has drawn criticism on sides – from those eligible claiming the amount is too low to critics saying they shouldn’t get anything.

Moreno, who already has Donald Trump’s approval, is the second GOP candidate to hop into the race and he will face Ohio State Senator Matt Dolan for Brown’s spot.

Brown’s 2024 spot is in jeopardy as Ohio – which has been known as a swing state in the past and has increasingly become more red, backing Trump in the presidential elections in 2016 and 2020.

Last year, JD Vance – who was Trump’s preferred candidate – was elected into the Senate.

On April 12, the former president took to Truth Social to back the immigrant, writing: ‘Word is the Bernie Moreno, the highest respected businessman from the GREAT STATE of OHIO, and the father-in-law of fantastic young Congressman, Max Miller, is thinking of running for Senate. He would not be easy to beat, especially against Brown, one of the worst in the Senate!’

Moreno, who shared the post to his Twitter page, wrote: ‘Thank you, sir!’

Moreno has also already posted pro-Trump campaign media, including where he claimed he was a ‘pro-Trump legal immigrant.’

‘Illegals come for the freebies, free money from Biden, and to take your job, and free passes for crime,’ the Colombian immigrant, who came to the States when he was five, said. ‘They’re changing our nations, let’s stop them.

‘Build the wall and make English our official language, let’s defend our country.’

He posted a photo of himself and his wife with Trump at a 2021 event for his politician in-law Max Miller.

‘It’s no coincidence that President Donald J Trump chose Ohio for his first rally of 2021. We were honored to welcome him!’ the post read.
