Paddle boarder, 70, dies after getting into trouble in the water on the hottest day of the year

A 70-year-old paddle boarder has died after getting into trouble in the sea of the Sussex coast on the hottest day of the year so far.

Emergency services battled to save the boarder after bringing him ashore at Worthing, West Sussex.

Temperatures along the south coast hit 24C (75F) as thousands flocked to the beaches on Bank Holiday Sunday.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 5.40pm on Sunday evening. 

The man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed. 

A spokesman for Sussex Police said the 70-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering a medical incident in the water.

It comes as two men in their 20s tragically died yesterday after getting into trouble in the water of the coast of Devon in Oddicombe, Torbay.

On Friday, the body of a teenager, formally identified as 15-year-old Lewis Michael Kirkpatrick, was pulled from a river in Carlisle after a group of friends ‘got into difficulty’ in the water.

A police spokesman said: ‘Police supported HM Coastguard and the ambulance service at an incident on Worthing beach at around 5.40pm on Sunday, May 28.

‘A man in his 70s was treated by the ambulance service after suffering a medical incident in the water.

‘He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

‘His next of kin have been informed.’

Police said the death is not believed to be suspicious and the coroner has been informed.
