‘It’s a whole new way to enjoy two American classics!’ Pepsi makes its first-ever condiment – but not all fans are convinced

  • The sauce is made from a Pepsi reduction infused with a variety of spices
  • The limited edition sauce is only available on July 4 at four US baseball stadiums
  •  Fans were divided over whether they would try the ‘Pepsi Colachup’ condiment

Pepsi has surprised fans by launching its first ever condiment in celebration of the Fourth of July.

The sauce – named ‘Pepsi Colachup’ – is infused with real Pepsi and has been developed with the help of the Culinary Institute of America Consulting, a business unit of the prestigious cooking school.

The brand is so confident that hot dogs are ‘better with Pepsi’, that it wants to give fans the chance to add even more of the iconic sweet, citrusy taste of a crisp, refreshing Pepsi-Cola directly onto their hot dog.

‘The concept is both simple and creative. The distinctive flavors and vibrant citrus blend of Pepsi enhances the bright and tangy characteristics of ketchup, offsetting the smokiness of the hot dog,’ said David Kamen, director of client experience for CIA Consulting. ‘It’s a whole new way to enjoy two American classics!’

However, not all Americans are convinced. ‘I love ya Pepsi, but this is a hard pass for me,’ one user wrote on Twitter.

The sauce has even been endorsed by Joey Chestnut, a competitive eater who holds the world hot dog-eating record, after devouring 76 Nathan’s Famous hot dogs in 10 minutes in 2021.

‘I’m thrilled to be partnering with Pepsi to show America that hot dogs go better with Pepsi,’ Chestnut said.

‘People might be surprised, but outside of competitions I love eating hot dogs at a more leisurely pace, and there’s no better way to eat a hot dog – steamed, grilled, or fried – than with a perfectly cool and crisp Pepsi.’

However the limited edition sauce is only available on July 4 at four US stadiums – Chase Field in Phoenix, Yankee Stadium  in New York City, Target Field in Minneapolis and Comerica Park in Detroit.

Those who are eager to try the condiment should look out for ‘sampling carts,’ the company said.

While some thought they might stick to their usual hot dog toppings, others were excited at the idea of trying ‘Pepsi Colachup’.

‘I NEED this in my life,’ one user wrote on Twitter, while another asked for the product to be sold in ‘Walmart or Target.’

The sauce is part of Pepsi Co’s two-year-old ‘Better with Pepsi’ ad campaign.
