Bill De Blasio has been spotted leaving his New York townhouse in an Uber first thing on Wednesday – shortly after announcing his split from his lesbian wife Chirlane McCray in a toe-curling interview.
The former New York City Mayor, 62, also tweeted to describe their separation as a ‘love story’ – while 68-year-old McCray emerged from the home they will continue to share to say the split was ‘the right decision for us’.
In a fawning New York Times interview, the couple cited myriad reasons for the split – from the strain of de Blasio overseeing America’s biggest city during Covid to McCray’s previously-declared homosexuality.
Speaking outside their townhouse in Park Slope, Brooklyn, on Wednesday, McCray insisted she retains ‘a very deep bond’ with the politician-turned-Harvard educator and that they still love one another.
She told reporters: ‘It was a big change for us, but Bill and I are still very much in love. We came to this decision together and I think it’s the right decision for us to start this new chapter in our lives.’
McCray appeared relaxed and cheerful as she told reporters she believed her ‘love story’ with de Blasio and their recent amicable split – while continuing to live in the same house – could provide a ‘model’ for other couples
Queried about the practicalities of the split – which will see the couple remain married, and live in the same house – McCray continued: ‘That’s what we’re figuring out. It’s one thing to make a decision, it’s another thing to figure out how it plays out and we’ll be talking about that over the next months.
‘I hope that we can be a model for how couples can communicate honestly about what their needs are and how to conduct themselves when they find it’s a time to move in a different direction, I think that’s important.
‘There’s a very deep bond between us, we’ve been together for nearly 32 years – serving shoulder to shoulder in City Hall and even before that.
‘We’ve raised a beautiful family – our family comes first. We just want to continue our lives as public people.’
She added that their children – Chiara, 25, and Dante, 26 – were ‘a little sad but very positive’ about the separation.
‘They know we love each other, and that we will continue to spend time together,’ she said.
McCray previously identified as a lesbian, but described de Blasio, 62, as her soulmate. The couple wed in 1994.

McCray’s relaxed and cheerful demeanor was strongly in evidence during Wednesday’s interview, conducted outside her family’s $1.8 million Park Slope home.
She has yet to say whether she plans to switch back to dating women after splitting with her husband.
