Allan Russell

Allan John Russell, a former professional football player from Scotland, was born on December 13, 1980, in Glasgow. Currently, Russell serves as the striker coach for the England national football team.

He began his football career in 1999 at Hamilton Academical, where he played over sixty league matches during his four-year tenure.

In 2003, Russell signed a two-year contract with St Mirren before moving to Macclesfield Town, an English club, in early 2005. However, his time at Macclesfield was short-lived as he left to join Mansfield Town at the beginning of the 2005-2006 season.

How Did Allan Russell Start His Profession?

Russell began his career in 1999 with Hamilton Academical, where he made over sixty league games over a four-year span. He was born in Glasgow. Russell spent two years with St. Mirren, starting in 2003, before attending Macclesfield Town of the English Football League in 2005.

After a short time at Macclesfield, Russell transferred to Mansfield Town for the 2005-06 season. In January 2007, Russell joined Partick Thistle and moved back to Scotland. He had one goal in one game for Partick, a 1-0 victory over Livingston.

After starting the 2007-08 season with Airdrie, Russell drew interest from Scottish Premier League clubs Kilmarnock and Dundee United with his performance and the fact that he had already scored more goals than in any previous season by February 2008.

After a record-breaking season in which he scored 28 goals for his second-division team, Kilmarnock signed Russell to a two-year contract in the Scottish Premier League in May 2008 after being named the league’s Player of the Year.

After his contract with Kilmarnock ended in 2010, he departed. On July 23, 2010, Russell inked an agreement with the Carolina RailHawks. He remained a team member until the 2011 season when they won back-to-back NASL titles in 2010 and 2011.

On December 8, 2011, he joined the Los Angeles Blues, a USL Pro Division team now known as the Orange County Blues. During his stint with the Orange County Blues, Russell captained the team and manned the defensive midfield and up top as a striker.

How Did Allan Russell Start His Coaching Career?

In March of 2017, Russell became the striker coach for the England national team. He was singled out for contributing to England’s set pieces after the squad scored a well-choreographed goal against Panama during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

In April of 2021, Russell began juggling his roles as assistant first-team coach at Aberdeen and England. A month later, he resigned from his advisory position in England after admitting to letting his younger brother drive without insurance.

A few months after being named their set-piece coach, Norwich City announced in December 2022 that Russell and the club’s Head of Football Development, Steve Weaver, would be co-head coaches on an interim basis following the dismissal of manager Dean Smith.
