She had always identified herself primarily as a singer, and losing her voice profoundly impacted her sense of identity and purpose. She also struggled with depression and anxiety after the surgery as she tried to deal with losing a talent that had defined her career for so many years.

Despite these challenges, Andrews continued to work in the entertainment industry, focusing more on acting and other creative endeavors than singing.

Although she has not been able to sing at the same level as before her surgery, Andrews has continued to inspire audiences with her talent, grace, and resilience.

Has Julie Andrews Undergone Any Surgery?

As a result of surgery to remove a lesion on her vocal cords in 1997, Julie Andrews developed scarred vocal cords, resulting in a reduced speaking voice and inability to sing.

Andrews filed a lawsuit against her doctors and the hospital, claiming she had not been informed of the risks of her surgery. A confidential settlement was reached, but Andrews has suffered a devastating blow to her gift.

Andrews’ vocal range was left at about an octave, and she needed help to reach middle and high notes. She became interested in cutting-edge innovations for vocal cord issues, such as a bagel that could temporarily heighten flexibility, but no solution was available to her.

Andrews had difficulty accepting her inability to sing as she adored being on stage. She underwent grief therapy and admitted to being in denial about her inability to communicate through her voice.

However, she eventually made peace with what happened and realized that her talent and soul were not solely defined by her voice. Andrews continued to reach audiences through new acting roles and embraced a writing career. She noted that “a door closes and a window opens,” and she found new opportunities for expression and fulfillment.

Her parents divorced when she was very young, and each remarried soon after. Her mother married Ted Andrews, and her Father married Winifred Maud Birkhead, a war widow and former hairstylist.

Despite her parents’ remarriage, Andrews’ early life was challenging, as her family struggled with poverty and lived in the wrong slum area of London. Additionally, her stepfather was an alcoholic and violent, and she was forced to fit a lock on her door after he twice tried to get into bed with her while drunk.

However, as her mother’s stage career improved, the family could move to better surroundings in Beckenham and eventually back to Andrews’ hometown of Hersham. There, they took up residence at the Old Meuse, where Andrews’ maternal grandmother had served as a maid.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Andrews’ talent was apparent from a young age, and her stepfather sponsored her lessons at the independent arts educational school Cone-Ripman School (ArtsEd) in London.

Later, she received voice instruction from concert soprano Madame Lilian Stiles-Allen, who enormously influenced her and considered her a star pupil. Andrews acknowledges her voice was “pure, white, thin” with a four-octave range.

After attending Cone-Ripman School, Andrews continued her education at the nearby Woodbrook School, a local state school in Beckenham. Though her early life was challenging, it laid the foundation for her successful acting and singing career.
