Tamayo Perry, a professional surfer from Hawaii, began his career with the Ocean Safety Department in July 2016 as a lifeguard on the North Shore.
He was well-known and respected in the surfing community worldwide. At a news conference, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi called Perry a “legendary waterman,” expressing that his death was “a tragic loss.”
On Sunday afternoon, June 23, 2024, Perry was fatally injured in a shark attack while surfing off the island of Oahu in Hawaii.
Authorities, including Honolulu Ocean Safety, and the city’s fire, police, and emergency medical services departments, responded to Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore just before 1 p.m. after receiving a report of a man with apparent shark bites.

Tamayo started surfing at the age of nine
Tamayo Perry was born on May 16, 1975, and was raised in a small country town just east of the North Shore on O’ahu.
He began surfing at the age of nine and went on to become a professional surfer for over 25 years, renowned for riding some of the world’s most dangerous waves, including the famous Pipeline.
In 1999, Perry’s career took off when he won the prestigious Pipeline Master trials, earning him a spot in the main event. There, he showcased his skills by upsetting the #1 World Title Contender in some of the biggest and most challenging conditions the Pipe Masters competition had ever seen.
This achievement catapulted him onto the world stage, leading to an invitation to the Teahupoo, Tahiti Trials, where he faced the world’s second most infamous wave. The immense waves demanded complete focus, commitment, and respect, and Perry rose to the challenge.
The pipeline was one of the most technically challenging and heaviest waves in the world, and Perry mastered it with remarkable skill and determination. He observed and developed techniques that allowed him to tackle these immense waves and consistently make it to the finals of major events.
Perry’s experiences in the water, both triumphant and harrowing, contributed to his extensive knowledge as a waterman. A significant turning point came when he was involved in a near-fatal accident while surfing a particularly large Pipeline wave.
This incident, caused by someone else’s lack of awareness, profoundly impacted him. It inspired Perry to focus on promoting proper surf etiquette and safety, sharing his hard-earned lessons with others.
