Wells, Says She Was in Mental Health Crisis
Heather Wells said she was going through a mental health crisis and regretted her actions during the flight. “I know it wasn’t rational, but I was really scared,” Wells said. “I’m really sorry for scaring and hurting people.”
The lawsuit, filed recently, details the incident. It claims Wells, seated in first class and after having a drink, became upset about an hour into the flight. Witnesses say she started moving around the plane and talking strangely to other passengers.
When a flight attendant tried to help, she became aggressive and threatened him. She allegedly tried to open the plane’s front door and had to be restrained by crew members and another passenger.
According to the lawsuit, Wells resisted being restrained, hitting a flight attendant several times before being taped to her seat. Even after that, she continued to kick, spit, and try to bite crew members and passengers. After landing in Charlotte, medical staff sedated her to safely take her off the plane and took her to a hospital for evaluation.
Heather Wells faces no criminal charges
Despite the incident on the flight, Heather Wells was not criminally charged but faced a substantial fine from the FAA amounting to $81,950. This penalty was issued during a period when the FAA was actively addressing disruptive passenger behavior, making it the largest fine imposed at that time.
