In 1981, Cindy and her family met Robert Morris at a youth revival in Tulsa. Morris was a 20-year-old traveling evangelist, married to his wife Debbie.
Cindy was 11 years old at the time and her family was actively involved in their church and various evangelistic events. Morris was invited to lead a youth revival in Cindy’s hometown of Hominy, Oklahoma, and soon began preaching regularly at their church on Sundays.
He frequently stayed at Cindy’s home, sometimes bringing his wife, Debbie, and their young son, Josh. The families grew close, and Cindy saw the Morrises as safe and trustworthy friends, often going on trips together.
However, on Christmas night, December 25, 1982, Morris’s behavior changed dramatically. During a visit, Morris asked Cindy to come to his room, which she did without suspicion.
Once there, he began touching her inappropriately and warned her never to tell anyone, saying it would “ruin everything.” This abuse continued until March 1987, taking place in both Texas and Oklahoma and even at the Morris home in Texas.
Cindy’s father, who was unknowingly supporting Morris’s ministry financially, was unaware of the abuse his daughter was suffering.
Cindy eventually confided in a close friend who knew both families. This friend urged her to tell her parents. When Cindy’s father learned the truth, he was outraged and contacted the head pastor of Shady Grove Church, demanding that Morris leave the ministry or he would report him to the authorities.
As a result, Morris reportedly stepped down from ministry for two years.

Dallas-area megachurch pastor Robert Morris admitted to “inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady” in the 1980s, following accusations from a woman who claimed he molested her when she was 12 years old.
Morris provided details in a public statement, explaining that while there was no intercourse, the behavior involved kissing and petting and occurred multiple times over several years.
The issue surfaced in March 1987, leading Morris to confess and seek repentance. He submitted himself to the Elders of Shady Grove Church and the young lady’s father.
They instructed him to step down from ministry and undergo counseling and freedom ministry, which he did. Morris emphasized that since then, he has committed to maintaining purity and accountability.
In 1989, Morris and his wife met with the survivor and her family to ask for forgiveness, which was granted. In a statement to WFAA, Gateway Church revealed that Morris underwent a two-year “restoration process” following his moral failure.
This process was closely monitored by the Elders at Shady Grove Church and included Morris stepping away from ministry and receiving both professional counseling and freedom ministry counseling.
Gateway Church also noted that there have been no further moral failures since the resolution of this 35-year-old matter.
