HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. (TCD) — Two men in their 60s were found fatally shot outside a home in suburban Chicago that had been set on fire just days after their mother died.
According to a statement, on June 5 at 3:50 a.m., the Highland Park fire and police departments responded to a call about a fire on a roof on the 1700 block of Park Avenue. Multiple fire trucks arrived, and first responders reportedly noted “heavy fire conditions.”
An officer from Tower Ladder 33 conducted a 360-degree size-up of the home as another truck began extinguishing the flames. During the search, they located the two deceased victims. Other firefighters entered the residence to search for other victims but did not find any.
WGN-TV reports the victims were identified as 63-year-old Marc Austwick and 60-year-old John Austwick. The Lake County Coroner reportedly determined the men had been shot to death.
Their mother, Phyllis Austwick, died May 31 at age 84. WGN reports there was supposed to be a memorial for her on Sunday, June 8.
According to WGN, police have taken someone into custody, but no additional information was available.
