A man has been charged after a car crashed and went up in flames in a residential area in Adelaide overnight.

A Holden is believed to have crashed into a tree on West Lakes Boulevard in Woodville West before 1.45am today and leaked a trail of petrol to Toddville Street.

The car was seen on fire and, as flames grew, a man allegedly fled the scene.

“Something blasted and I said to my husband ‘Something is weird, can you check outside’,” witness Satvir Kaur told 9News.

“Not even just families, but for everyone in the neighbourhood, it’s not OK to be woken up to a big blaze,” Vicky Humphries added.

The fire was extinguished but the Holden was destroyed by the blaze.

Police tracked the car’s registration to a home only a few streets away in Woodville West, where they found their alleged suspect.

The 28-year-old man was breath tested and allegedly recorded a blood alcohol reading nearly twice the legal limit – 0.093.

Police are investigating whether the Holden was allegedly the same car that was reported hooning and doing burnouts, which sent sparks flying, on Circuit Drive in Hendon before the fire.

The Woodville West man will be summonsed to face court at a later date for drink driving, driving without due care and leaving the scene of an accident.

In the meantime, he has lost his licence for the next six months.
