A 10-year-old boy has been charged over the alleged broad daylight sexual assault of an Italian tourist in Cairns CBD.
Detective Inspector Kevin Goan said the 23-year-old woman was walking on the corner of Spence and Lake streets when she was allegedly sexually assaulted by the boy about 10am yesterday.
He said she was on the phone to police when four others then allegedly set upon her, throwing objects at her and punching her repeatedly.
“She received minor injuries, nevertheless, it would’ve been a frightening situation for her,” he said at a press conference today. 
Goan said the 10-year-old boy from Manoora was taken into custody and charged with one count each of sexual assault, common assault and assault occasioning bodily harm whilst in company.
He was later released to his home.
A girl, who he alleged was another main offender, has been dealt with under restorative justice and also released.
The three others allegedly involved are known to police and have not been dealt with. 
“We know who they are and we know where they are so it’s a matter of us being able to deal with them in a manner that is authorised under the Juvenile Justice Act,” Goan said.
Goan said the young age of the boy and the nature of the alleged offence was unusual.
“It’s not very common at all. I can’t think of another instance where a young boy has committed this type of offence,” he alleged.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
