More than 100 people have gathered on the New South Wales’ Far North Coast to support a mother mourning the loss of her two-year-old son, killed by his father in a murder-suicide.

The Lismore community yesterday held a candlelight vigil for two-year-old Rowan who was found dead alongside his deceased father, James, 38, in a unit on College Street in East Lismore last Sunday.

Among those gathered was the mother of the murdered toddler, Lismore doctor Sophie Roome, who last week said she and her family were facing “incomprehensible grief”.

She did not speak or attend the crowd.

Others in attendance included small children from the local community who attended swimming lessons with Rowan.

Police said that they believed the two were killed in a suspected murder-suicide.

James was an employee at NSW Health.

“Rowan’s life was ended by an evil and cowardly act of violence, perpetrated by a person he should have been able to trust the most. There are no possible excuses for this hurt, and no end to the pain it has caused,” Roome said in a statement released with her family last week.
