A NSW police officer’s employment status is under review after he allegedly punched a man and threw his phone on the ground in Sydney‘s eastern suburbs before running away from on-duty officers who tried to arrest him.

The 31-year-old senior constable was off-duty when he approached a 26-year-old man as he got out of a taxi in Coogee at midnight on Sunday, April 14.

Police allege the senior constable punched the man and threw his phone to the ground.

Other officers tried to arrest the 31-year-old but he allegedly fled from them.

Police said after a short chase he was arrested and taken to Maroubra Police Station, where he was later released.

The 31-year-old was charged with common assault and resisting police officer in execution of duty on Monday, May 20.

He is due to appear before Waverley Local Court on Wednesday, July 10.
