Two motorcycle riders have been charged for allegedly speeding at 298km/h on Melbourne highways.

The pair were arrested this week and charged with various offences.

The first incident allegedly happened on the Metropolitan Ring Road in Thomastown about 4.40pm on April 14 when a motorbike rider allegedly reached speeds of 298km/h.

Following an investigation, police on Tuesday arrested a 23-year-old man at Meadow Heights.

He was later charged with reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and dangerous driving.

Another man, aged 24, who police allege reached speeds of 299 km/h on Sunbury Road, at Bulla about 11.10 pm on May 15, was arrested yesterday.

Police will allege he reached speeds of 240km/h while performing a mono, or a wheelie, in the Burnley Tunnel just before 10 pm on May 2.

During a search of his Sunbury home yesterday, police also seized a red BMW motorcycle.

The man was charged with reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and drive at a speed dangerous.

Both men were bailed and are due to front court in December.

Police say the arrests show motorbikers and other motorists should not speed.

“For those thinking they can speed and get away with it, know that it won’t be long until police are knocking on your door,” said Acting Senior Sergeant Sean Foley.

“This kind of high-risk behaviour is nothing to brag about. It could seriously injure or kill you, your friends or an innocent road user.”
