Two teenage girls have been arrested in Victoria after a police chase ended in a crash in Melbourne this morning.

Officers first noticed a 2015 silver Honda CRV travelling at high speeds along Cranbourne Road in the southeastern suburb of Frankston, about 1.15am.

Police tried to intercept the Honda but were unsuccessful.

About 10 minutes later, the driver lost control of the car while turning a corner.

The car crashed into a fence and then a tree on Coprosma Avenue.

The female teenage driver is alleged to have initially fled the scene before returning a few minutes later.

Both the driver and her passenger escaped injury in the crash and were arrested by police at the scene.

The girls, both aged 16, are assisting police with their enquiries.

Victoria Police say the Honda CRV is believed to have been stolen just over a month ago, between 30 March and 1 April, from an address in Richmond.
