A man has been arrested after allegedly stealing a car and leading police on a high speed pursuit along the M1 on Friday night.

Dozens of officers and a police helicopter tracked the driver from Loganlea to Nerang, ultimately using tire spikes to stop the driver.

The 26-year-old man has been charged with dangerous driving and unlicenced driving offences, and obstructing police.

An Audi sports car had allegedly been stolen from a home in Mermaid Waters on May 27.

Days later it was spotted by police in Logalea, south of Brisbane.

Police pursued the car for several hours down the M1 towards the Gold Coast before tire spikes were deployed.

The car crashed into a highway barrier around 8.30 pm, and the 26-year-old was arrested at the roadside.

He will face court at a later date.
