A woman has been seriously injured in Melbourne after being allegedly struck by a car.

Police allege the pedestrian was walking across Johnstone Street in Jacana when she was struck by a Toyota hatchback at 9.45pm yesterday.

The 45-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries, and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The 58-year-old male driver stopped at the scene and is assisting police.

An investigation into the crash has been launched.
