The police chase was quickly called off due to the unsafe way the car was being driven.

But the driver the continued on, smashing into a black Mercedes-Benz in the nearby suburb of Roselands and then eventually crossing onto a footpath in Kingsgrove.

A video filmed by a pedestrian shows the car slamming into a black metal fence knocking part of it down.

The car, clearly damaged, then accelerates away again only the veer back into the same fence again.

People walking on the street can be seen jumping away from the path of the car and running up the street.

The driver then gets out of the car and attempts to run away but is stopped and detained by bystanders, one holding what appears to be a metal pole.

Police confirmed they were called to the scene and arrested a 25-year-old man.

Upon searching him they found a BB air pistol hidden in his pants.

He is expected to be charged overnight.
