An Australian businessman has been arrested and remains in custody in the south of France while police investigate the suspected attempted murder of his Russian-born wife.
Damien Carew had been living with Anna Polianskaya-Carew and their two children at a rented villa in La Turbie, just north of the wealthy city-state of Monaco on the French Riviera.
Local media outlets report 43-year-old Carew, who is believed to originally be from Melbourne, called emergency services last Wednesday after an incident involving his wife.
She had lost consciousness and remains in a coma while Carew is in custody and their children are in the care of her family, English-language news website NEWS.MC reports.

According to news.mc, Carew had recently spent several months in prison and had been under ‘judicial control’ in relation to a money-laundering case.
Ms Polianskaya-Carew, 33, worked as a brand manager at the Stardust boutique in Monaco’s luxurious Hotel de Paris, her Linkedin profile states.
Carew is described as a real estate agent and the couple were directors of Sterling Estates International, which has previously been registered as a business in London and Monaco.
The Monaco-Matin newspaper reports the family’s villa is partly hidden by a thick hedge and is located at the end of a dead-end road.

Neighbours said they had heard nothing on the day of the alleged incident but confirmed police had been attended the house, which was sealed off with crime scene tape.
Prosecutors had opened a judicial investigation into attempted aggravated murder and intentional violence against a spouse.
Monaco-Matin reported Carew was represented by a Parisian lawyer when he appeared before a judge who ordered he be detained.
The outlet also reports Carew’s company has been placed in compulsory liquidation.
